What is the best AI writing tool in 2026? Our real-world tests
Based on our hands-on tests of September 1, 2026, ChatGPT is the best AI writing tool (4.7/5): versatile, fast, and — with Claude and Notion AI — the only one to exactly follow the requested language and format. Claude (4.4/5) keeps the most natural tone for long-form content, and Notion AI (4.2/5) wins if you work in Notion. One caveat: Jasper and Rytr ignored the brief's language and defaulted to English — a dealbreaker for multilingual work.
How we tested the AI writing tools
On September 1, 2026, we gave each tool the same brief: "Write a 100-word LinkedIn post to promote a sleep-tracking app" — issued in French, to also measure multilingual reliability. A simple but revealing exercise: it measures language quality, format compliance (LinkedIn post, ~100 words) and the ability to work in the requested language. Each tool is scored on 5 weighted criteria per our methodology. Copy.ai could not be tested: no free trial is available as of this date — we prefer to exclude it from the ranking rather than invent a score.

ChatGPT: the most reliable at executing a brief (4.7/5)
Tested on its free tier, ChatGPT delivered exactly what was asked: a LinkedIn post in the requested language, in the right format, at the right length. Fast, versatile, with solid linguistic quality, it stands out as the Swiss army knife of AI writing — even more powerful in the paid version (DALL-E access, advanced models).
- Strengths: exact instruction-following, versatility, speed, solid language quality.
- Weaknesses: limited free tier, can produce an "AI tone" on creative topics.
- Verdict: an excellent all-purpose AI writer, even more powerful in the paid version.
Claude: the most natural tone (4.4/5)
Claude keeps the best writing style on the market: an authentic tone, natural phrasing, and excellent long-form capabilities thanks to its giant context window. Its projects and contextual memory features are valuable for regular writers. It loses a few points on free-tier limits.
- Strengths: the most natural tone on the market, excellent for long-form, projects and contextual memory.
- Weaknesses: message limit on the free tier, no dedicated marketing-writing tools.
- Verdict: the reference for professional and creative writing with an authentic tone.
Notion AI: the best choice for Notion users (4.2/5)
Notion AI aced our exercise: a LinkedIn post in the requested language, format respected, with a catchy hook, figures, a clear call to action and hashtags — plus smart placeholders for personalization. Its native integration with Notion makes it the smoothest tool if your work already lives there.
- Strengths: perfect Notion integration, natural language, LinkedIn format respected, personalization placeholders.
- Weaknesses: requires a Notion subscription + AI add-on (~$10/user/mo), no format-specialized agents.
- Verdict: excellent for Notion users who want to write without switching tools.
Jasper (3.7/5) and Rytr (3.5/5): the multilingual problem
Jasper: powerful, but English-first
Jasper offered a dedicated LinkedIn agent with a guided workflow and smart iteration suggestions — impressive. But the post was generated in English despite our non-English brief. At ~$49/mo with a 7-day trial, it's a tool designed for English-speaking marketing teams. If you write exclusively in English, expect a better experience than our score reflects.
Rytr: affordable, but limited beyond English
Rytr offers a generous free plan (10,000 characters) and a simple, fast interface. Same finding though: answer in English, as a dense block without LinkedIn structure, no hashtags, with an ad-like tone. Fine for short, simple English texts; poorly suited to non-English writing.
What about Copy.ai?
We could not test Copy.ai: no free trial is available as of September 1, 2026 (Chat plan at ~$29/mo for 5 seats). In all honesty, we're excluding it from the ranking rather than assigning an unverified score.
How to use AI for writing without producing generic content
- Give context: provide your audience, tone, examples of your writing and the expected outline. Brief quality determines 80% of result quality.
- Specify the language: our tests show some tools (Jasper, Rytr) default to English — explicitly require your target language in the prompt.
- Iterate: ask for two or three variants, then have weak passages rewritten rather than accepting the first draft.
- Add the human touch: include your experiences, figures and opinions. That's what separates useful content from interchangeable content — and what Google values through its experience criteria (E-E-A-T).
- Fact-check: every figure or factual claim generated by an AI must be verified before publication.
