Ranking of the 6 best AI assistants in 2026 (real tests)
We tested each assistant's free tier on September 1, 2026, using the same protocol: a factual health research question (with a format instruction: answer in 3 sentences), followed by writing and summarizing tasks. Each tool is scored on 5 weighted criteria — quality of results (40%), ease of use (20%), value for money (20%), reliability (10%) and features (10%). Here is our ranking.

How we tested
Each assistant was queried on its free tier on September 1, 2026, with identical instructions. The main test: a general-audience health question requiring verifiable facts, with an explicit format instruction (answer in 3 sentences). Two things were measured: the accuracy and sourcing of the answer, and instruction-following — a good assistant must do both. Full per-criterion scores are detailed in the sections below.
Perplexity: why it takes first place (5/5)
Perplexity works as a conversational search engine, and our test confirmed it brilliantly. Where other assistants answered in generalities, Perplexity cited 15 verifiable sources and precise figures: a meta-analysis of 75 trials (2024), "1,000 daily steps = -10% depression risk", "7,500 steps = -42% symptoms". No competitor comes close to this level of factual reliability.
- Strengths: systematically cited sources with verifiable links, precise figures, accurate answers.
- Weaknesses: slightly more complex interface than ChatGPT, limited "Pro" searches on the free tier.
- Verdict: the absolute reference for sourced research — the first reflex for fact-checking.
ChatGPT: the most versatile (4.7/5)
Tested on its free tier (GPT-4o mini, no account), ChatGPT answered immediately, accurately, and followed the 3-sentence instruction — which Gemini and Copilot failed to do. The interface remains the most intuitive on the market. With web search, voice, images and code in a single app, it stays the most versatile assistant.
- Strengths: immediate and accurate answers, instruction-following, ultra-intuitive interface.
- Weaknesses: free tier without history or saved chats, no access to GPTs or the most powerful models (GPT-4o) without a subscription.
- Verdict: excellent free assistant for everyday tasks; the Plus plan (~$20/mo) unlocks its full potential.
Le Chat (Mistral): the French surprise (4.7/5)
Developed by French company Mistral AI, Le Chat delivered 3 perfectly calibrated sentences in our test, with neat visual formatting (bold keywords) and rich content: endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, mental clarity. Its European data hosting is reassuring for GDPR-conscious users and businesses.
- Strengths: perfect instruction-following, clear and structured presentation, European data hosting.
- Weaknesses: less detailed answers than Perplexity or Claude, fewer third-party integrations, smaller ecosystem.
- Verdict: excellent value with a clear, structured presentation — ideal for European users.
Claude: the best writer (4.4/5)
Claude (Anthropic) produced the most detailed and natural-sounding answers in our comparison: precise scientific references (cortisol, endorphins, circadian rhythm), a human tone, and appreciated features like projects and contextual memory. Its very large context window makes it the best tool for analyzing entire documents — contracts, reports, manuscripts.
- Strengths: very detailed answers with scientific references, natural tone, projects and memory, long-document analysis.
- Weaknesses: message limit on the free tier, occasional intrusive memory-update prompts, fewer integrations than ChatGPT.
- Verdict: the best choice for long-form writing and scientific analysis, with a more human tone than the competition.
Microsoft Copilot (4.1/5) and Gemini (4.0/5): how good are they?
Microsoft Copilot, the Microsoft 365 choice
Copilot provided a complete answer with relevant follow-up suggestions (stress reduction, mood improvement, cognitive stimulation). Its real strength remains integration with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams: if your company runs on Microsoft 365, it summarizes your meetings and generates documents from your internal files. But it failed the format instruction, answering in a continuous paragraph instead of 3 sentences.
Gemini, Google's assistant
Gemini produced solid scientific content (endorphins, serotonin, sleep, self-esteem, cognitive functions) and its integration with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive) is a genuine everyday asset. Same limitation as Copilot in our test: the format instruction was not followed — a single paragraph instead of 3 structured sentences. Better for research and the Google ecosystem than for precise writing.
