How we tested
On September 23, 2026, we submitted 8 identical prompts to both tools — sourced factual research, recent news, summarizing a news article, a 120-word professional email, a route calculation, a Python function, a strict formatting instruction and a grammar question. Protocol rules:
- Alternating tools from one prompt to the next, to avoid fatigue and context bias.
- Single attempt per prompt: no retries, no rephrasing.
- Timing of every answer, from submission to end of generation.
- Manual fact-checking of every dated or numeric claim after the test.
- Free tiers only: prompts P1 to P5 without an account, then P6 to P8 with a free account on both tools — we explain why below.
The 8 prompts, score by score
Scores from 1 to 5 per prompt, generation time in parentheses. Perplexity wins 3 prompts, ChatGPT 1, and 4 end in a tie — but the overall score also factors in smoothness, reliability and access, hence the final gap.

No account: the Perplexity wall
This is the most unexpected finding of this test. We had planned to run the entire protocol without an account, in private browsing — the conditions of a first-time visitor. On ChatGPT's side: no problem, all 8 prompts went through without any friction. On Perplexity's side:
- Blocked after 2 prompts, with a sign-up pop-up on every query.
- Unblocked after a one-hour wait, then blocked again after a single prompt.
- The next day, refused to answer any prompt at all — even when switching networks (4G tethering), which points to browser-level blocking, not just IP-based limiting.
We therefore completed the protocol (P6 to P8) with a free account on each tool, under identical conditions. Practical takeaway: Perplexity's free tier is excellent with an account, but no-account usage has become virtually impossible — worth knowing before you click, since Perplexity's official documentation still claims the tool can be used without signing in.
Where Perplexity wins
Sourced research (P1, P2)
This is Perplexity's specialty, and our test confirms it once again: on factual and news questions, every claim comes with a cited, verifiable source — we checked them all, and they are valid. On recent OpenAI announcements (P2), Perplexity delivers dated, accurate information where ChatGPT stays more general (5/5 vs 4/5).
Code (P6)
Ask for a Python function that detects palindromes while ignoring accents and case: Perplexity provides correct, idiomatic code (unicodedata + casefold()), runnable examples whose stated outputs are accurate, and a variant handling spaces and punctuation on its own initiative — beyond the brief. ChatGPT delivers equally correct code, but without anticipating that case (5/5 vs 4/5).
French grammar (P8)
On the difference between "afin de" (infinitive) and "afin que" (subjunctive), Perplexity gives the most complete explanation with correctly built examples (5/5 vs 4/5).
Where ChatGPT wins
Speed and smoothness
ChatGPT answers in 2.5 seconds on average, vs 4.75 s for Perplexity — nearly twice as fast. And above all, everything works instantly, with no account, no pop-up, no blocking. For daily use, that absence of friction matters a lot.
Reliability of the displayed answer (P5)
Our calculation prompt (a route with a time change; correct answer: 10:18) highlights an editorial flaw in Perplexity: its detailed reasoning did contain the right value… but at the very end of the text, in a mix of French and English, after a wrong displayed conclusion. A hurried user walks away with the wrong answer. ChatGPT gives the right answer, clearly, on the first try (5/5 vs 2/5).
Our verdict
For most uses, choose ChatGPT (4.8/5). Faster, smoother, usable without an account, reliable in its displayed answers: it is the best everyday reflex on a free tier.
For sourced factual research, choose Perplexity (4.5/5). Verifiable citations, precise figures, excellent surprises on code and French grammar — provided you create a free account, as no-account usage became virtually impossible in our tests.
